Jerry’s Place, Louis Armstrong Center
Join us for an intimate open rehearsal and discussion with Trinidad-born trumpeter, percussionist, and composer Etienne Charles, presented as part of his residency with the Louis Armstrong House Museum and Archives.
A 2015 Guggenheim Fellow and 2022 Creative Capital Awardee, Charles is known for blending Caribbean rhythms, lush trumpet lines, and cultural storytelling into transformative musical narratives. His acclaimed projects—including Carnival: The Sound of a People Vol. 1, Creole Soul, and San Juan Hill—explore diasporic connections, amplify marginalized voices, and bridge the past with the present through sound.
Speaking on his residency, Charles shares:
“It’s a huge honor to be chosen to work with the Louis Armstrong House Museum and Archives on the 2025 Armstrong Now Project. I’m keenly looking forward to learning so much more about Louis Armstrong, his history and legacy.”
This special program invites audiences to witness Charles’s creative process firsthand as he experiments, reflects, and explores new works inspired by Louis Armstrong’s enduring legacy.
